The Blessings of Waiting on God
Discover how waiting on God can strengthen your marriage and deepen your love for each other.
Understanding Waiting on God In life and marriage, waiting can be one of the most challenging experiences. We often feel the urgency to act, to resolve conflicts, or to make decisions that will lead to immediate results. Yet, the Bible encourages us to embrace patience and trust God's perfect timing. “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (Psalm 27:14). This verse reassures us of the strength found in waiting and the significance of trusting God throughout the process.
The Dangers of Rushing and Waiting As couples, we must navigate between two extremes: rushing into decisions and waiting indefinitely. Rushing can lead to unnecessary struggles, as we may put too much pressure on our love and relationships. Conversely, waiting too long might keep us stuck in a cycle of indecision and fear. The call here is to recognize when it's time to take action and when it's wise to remain patient. Reflecting on Deuteronomy 1:6, “The Lord our God said to us at Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain,’” we can see that sometimes, the Lord is waiting for us to advance instead of using waiting as a means to delay action.
Active Waiting vs. Passive Waiting It's vital for couples to understand the difference between active and passive waiting. Active waiting involves seeking God's will through prayer, discussing your hopes, and taking intentional steps together. Passive waiting can look like over-spiritualizing our inaction—seeking confirmation endlessly or attending seminar after seminar without making changes in our lives. God has already moved; He often needs us to step in faith and act on what He lays on our hearts.
Communicating During the Wait Good communication is vital while you're waiting. Make sure that neither partner feels abandoned or unheard. Instead of letting silence breed distance, actively engage with one another. Feedback helps transform communication from misunderstanding to clarity. Discuss your feelings and fears while waiting, and allow each other the space to listen meaningfully. Often, the struggles in waiting are intensified by miscommunication or assumptions. Let your words and actions reflect the love that God wants for your marriage.
Recognizing God in Your Timing In acknowledging that God's timing is distinct from our desires, we can find peace amidst uncertainty. Even if we feel inadequately prepared for a particular moment, God can still weave His divine purpose through it. Remember Joseph, who demonstrated patience and self-control despite betrayal and heartache. Saying, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20), Joseph shows us that waiting doesn’t negate God’s sovereignty in your relationship. Trust Him and each other throughout the waiting process, knowing that His plans are greater than ours.
Couple Challenge This week, dedicate time to pray together, lifting up areas in your marriage where you feel uncertain. Discuss how you can actively support one another while waiting on God's timing. Consider starting a shared journal of faith, noting down prayers and reflections, and watch how God moves in your relationship.
